About the Boat

We began the search for our boat in early 2005 with trips to Seattle, WA, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Jacksonville, FL and Boston, MA. We had general ideas of what we wanted in a boat, but looking at several different boats helped us rethink the items that were important.  We organized and documented our visit on each boat by completing an extensive evaluation form that John developed.  The form allowed us to document facts as well as subjective evaluations to help us target our search.

Our budget restricted us to older boats. We stumbled onto a 1984, 44 foot Stamas ketch listed in the Florida Keys and liked the design.  A few weeks after we saw the Stamas in the Keys another one was listed for sale in Melbourne, FL. Stamas continues to build power boats in Tarpon Springs Florida .  In the early 1980’s they built 26 sailboats, designed by Bob Johnson, the Island Packet guy before he started Island Packet Yachts.
